Als echte voetballiefhebber wil je ook wel eens weten hoe het er over de grens aan toe gaat. Zo hebben wij regelmatig wedstrijden in Duitsland en België bezocht. Wedstrijden die makkelijk te bezoeken zijn. Nu kwam een van de jongens van Legio Noviomagum met het idee om gezamenlijk een wedstrijd in Engeland te bezoeken. Prima idee dachten wij zo, maar naar welke club wil je dan gaan? Naar West-Ham, Chelsea, Millwall zeg het maar. "Nee joh we gaan naar Dover Athletic FC." Nog nooit van gehoord was de eerste reactie. De meesten van ons stonden dan ook niet meteen te springen om een lange reis te maken om een club op amateurniveau te bekijken.

Achteraf was het de moeite dubbel en dwars waard. Wat een pracht van een club zeg! Ondanks dat het een amateurclub is, weten ze daar wel hoe voetbal beleefd moet worden. Lekker ouderwets een kaartje kopen, niks gefouilleerd worden, een lekker biertje en voor de verandering een keer mooi weer. Wat wil je nog meer? Gastvrij werden wij ontvangen door iedereen die een zwart-wit hart had. De supporters van Dover Athletic waren oprecht blij dat wij juist naar hún club kwamen kijken. Bijkomend pluspuntje was dat de club uitgerekend deze wedstrijd kampioen kon worden. Helaas konden wij het volksfeest aan het eind niet mee pakken omdat we op tijd terug bij de trein moesten zijn. As a real football-fanatic you sometimes want to know what's going on across the border. That's why we regularly visit games in Germany and Belgium. Those can be visitied quite easily. This time the boys of Legio Noviomagum came up with the idea of jointly visiting a game in the United Kingdom. Splendid idea, we reckoned, but which club to go to? To West Ham, Chelsea or Millwall, maybe? No way, let's go to Dover Athletic FC! "Never heard of it" was our first response. Most of us were not immediately very excited to make a long journey to examine a football-club at amateur level.

Looking back it was worth every penny/eurocent. What a splendid club it is! Although it's an amateur-club, they know very well how to enjoy football. Buying a ticket the good, old-fashioned-way, no body searches, a nice pint of lager and beautiful weather for a change. What more can you wish for? We were given a very warm welcome by everyone with a black and white heart. The Dover Athletic fans were sincerely glad that we came to watch their club. An additional advantage was that the club could become champions during this game. Unfortunately we could not join the celebrations at the end because we had to catch the train.
